When the Barrage structure was finished, the fish population had to adapt to a lake-like regulated environment.  Today, the most abundant indigenous species of fish are Yellow Fish and Moggel.  The introduction of exotic species such as bass and carp, have added value to the Vaal River Barrage as an inland recreational area.
