Located in the middle part of Sedibeng District Municipality, Midvaal Local Municipality is the smallest of the three Sedibeng local municipalities in terms of population, but largest in terms of area. It was previously called Meyerton Municipality (changed 01/10/2000). The major towns/areas include Meyerton, Eikenhof, Walkerville/De Deur, Henley-on-Klip, Vaal Marina, Randvaal, Rissiville, Suikerbosrand and Sicelo.

The area comprises urban settlements, rural areas and farms. Some of the main industries of Midvaal are: Vaal Sanitaryware, Heineken Breweries, Tongaat Hulett Starch, Samancor. The recent establishment of the R59 industrial corridor has enhanced the industrial potential of the area and many major companies are in the process of establishing themselves along this corridor.

The Tourism sector of Midvaal has great potential due to the healthy Highveld climate, scenic views and proximity to the Vaal Dam. The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, the Vaal Marina town with its motor boats, jet skis and yachts and Bass Lake offer the visitor a wide variety of sporting and leisure activities. The heritage sites in Midvaal include the Witkop Blockhouse and the Danie Theron Memorial.
