Founded in 1972 by Leslie Immelman and today run by his son, Gary, AK Stone Guards is truly a family business. AK Stone Guards is South Africa’s largest privately owned manufacturer of motor vehicle bumpers and other accessories. It produces a range of products for most local car manufacturers that includes centre consoles, wheel arches, car seat covers, carpets, bumpers, side mirrors, chrome emblems and spoilers.
Although Vereeniging serves as the company’s headquarters, there are two operations in Australia, two tool rooms in Taiwan, two operations in Port Elizabeth and a motor sport signage subsidiary in Midrand. The company also has shares in a New Zealand moulding company. All new locations are chosen for their proximity to car-manufacturing hubs.
AK Stone Guards growth came from a polyurethane moulding process introduced in 1982, producing mud flaps and boot spoilers, and then injection moulding in 1987, which converted many car manufacturers to AK Stone Guards. Its clients include Volkswagen, Nissan, General Motors, Ford, BMW, Toyota and Fiat.
