Originally founded in 1929 at Parow, Western Province by the Kaplan and Kushlick families as the Cape Gate Fence & Wire Works (Pty) Limited, the company became Cape Gate (Pty) Ltd in 1962 on the purchase of a small wire netting plant on 15 hectares in Vanderbijlpark. Today, it is a major producer of wire and steel products with its own source of raw materials. Cape Gate is one of the largest privately owned companies in the Southern hemisphere. The company looks at innovative hi-tech solutions for a broad spectrum of strategic industries.

Davsteel, the steel manufacturing arm of the Cape Gate group is situated in Vanderbijlpark. Davsteel’s main product range includes reinforcing bar in straight lengths as well as coils; light section profiles (i.e. angles, flats and squares); and wire rod for the processing of wire and wire products. Davsteel’s sister companies, Sharon Wire and Orenwire, are divisions of Cape Gate (Pty) Ltd, and utilise most of the wire rod production for a wide variety of wire products as well as medium and high carbon wire products for sophisticated applications, and a specific range of steel wire ropes.

1962 - Cape Gate (Pty) Limited was established by the purchase of a small netting plant on 15 hectares in Vanderbijlpark.

1967 - The Sharon Wire Mill division established to produce uncoated and galvanized wire, welded mesh, diamond mesh, barbed wire, field fence and other products.

1975 - The Davsteel division established, and rolling mills for the production of wire rod, re-bar and rounds commissioned.

1980 - An EAF Meltshop consisting of a 45 ton electric arc furnace, casting machine and associated plant for steel manufacturing was commissioned.

1981 - The establishment of the Orenwire division to produce specialist wire products
