Baldwins Steel, the steel service centre giant of the Vaal Triangle, was established at Vanderbijlpark in 1961 first as H Alers Hankey, and then in the mid 1970s as part of Baldwins. During 1989 the Bronx slitting line was commissioned. This increased the range of steel processing equipment considerably, enabling the company to meet the majority of market demand more effectively. Slit coil is supplied to a wide spectrum of markets which includes furniture, tube, wheel, auto components and the building industry. Apart from the slitting capabilities, Baldwins Vanderbijlpark also has fully computerised blanking, guillotining and cut-to-length equipment. Steel stockholding facilities are extensive, with 40 000 tons held in all sizes and qualities of steel to meet industry requirements. Baldwins has its own fleet of trucks which delivers to customers as promptly as possible, thus enabling customers to hold minimal stocks.

Kulungile Metals was established in 2001 with the management buy-out of Dorbyl’s metal-trading divisions. Its Baldwins Steel trading division has been among South Africa’s leading suppliers and distributors of carbon-steel products since its inception in 1923. The Kulungile Metals Group has expanded their existing presence in Vanderbijlpark by adding a branch in Meyerton which caters for manufacturers and the DIY enthusiast.

Kulingile Metals Group process, distribute and supply steel, stainless steel and aluminium in the form of sheet, plate and coil, as well as structural and other long product profiles. The Group offer the following value added services: Slitting from 0.45 to 6mm thick material; Cut to length from 0.21 to 6mm in gauge and a width from 20mm to 1500 - Blanking Presses - 1 X 1500 tons, 1 X 600 tons and 2 X 200 tons; Roll open sections such as lip channels and W-Straps; Guillotining; Pickling; Phosphating; DIY carports and palisade sections are now sold at the Meyerton branch.
