In 1935 McKinnon Chain (South Africa) (Pty.) Limited established a factory at Vereeniging and so pioneered the manufacture of Chain in South Africa. During the previous 15 years Canadian manufactured McKinnon Chain had been imported and sold through a Manufacturers' Representative in Johannesburg.

Today, McKinnon’s Vereeniging forge is now a subsidiary of Anglo American’s Scaw Metals group. The products (chains, links, slings and fittings) are used widely in South Africa and abroad in lifting, loading and pulling applications in the agricultural, transport engineering, marine, construction, mining, offshore oil, forestry and sugar industries.

The main product lines manufactured by the group are rolled steel (much of which is supplied to Scaw’s downstream operations), steel and alloy iron castings, cast alloy iron and forged steel grinding media, chain, steel wire rope, strand and wire products. These are supplied to the global construction, railway, power generation, mining, cement, marine, engineering and agricultural markets
