African Products is the Starch & Glucose division of the Tongaat-Hulett Group. It is the largest producer of glucose to the confectionery industry, the spray drying industry and the brewing industry, as well as the largest supplier of starch to the paper and corrugated board industries. Two of its wet mills are located in the Vaal Triangle, one at Meyerton and the other at Kliprivier. Its products include modified and unmodified starches, glucose, maltose and dextrose syrups, glucose powders, caramel colour, sorbitol, maize germ, high protein gluten meal, gluten feed and corn steep liquor. It is Africa’s largest producer of starch and glucose from maize products.

The ultra-modern world-class starch processing plant facility at Kliprivier was officially opened in August 1998. It increased the company’s total milling capacity from 1500 ton per day to 2750 tons per day. The Kliprivier plant has a milling capacity of 1,200 ton per day which has the infrastructure to be expanded to almost 3,000 ton per day in the future. About half of the Kliprivier’s mill capacity is designated for starch production, all of food grade standard. The other half is used for the manufacture of maltose, which is made from starch using enzymatic conversion.

In 1969 African Products bought the Meyerton factory from a cooperative. It currently mills 300 ton of maize per day and can grind three types of maize: yellow, white and waxy maize. The original planning around Kliprivier involved retiring Meyerton’s wet milling capacity. However, the company’s new low volume, high value product initiative has seen Meyerton come into its own as a facility where value is added to starch such as that which is used in tomato sauce, mayonnaise and other foodstuffs.

Toothpaste, soups, sweets, paper, board, braai briquettes, textiles, beer, spices, beverages, glue, intravenous drips and sweeteners are only a few of the industries currently making use of the products and co-products produced by African Products.
