Merisol is a joint venture forged in 1997 between two cresylic acid production companies (Merichem - a private company based in Houston, Texas - and Sasol Phenolics) to become the world’s largest producer of cresylic acid. Merichem possesses the world’s foremost technology for the production of high quality cresylic acids and pure isomers from naturally occurring sources. Sasol is a world leader in the production of synthetic fuels and chemicals from coal and the largest producer of cresylic acid feedstocks. Merisol RSA, based at Sasolburg, is a R500 million company with 90 employees and is run by Vereeniging born Joe Makhoere.

The phenolics and cresylics produced by Merisol are used in the manufacture of:

antiseptics and disinfectants; fragrances, deodorising, odor-enhancer; resins (phenol-formaldehyde, phenolic, and epoxy) and their additives; phosphate esters (plasticizers); herbicides and pharmaceuticals; rubber and plastic antioxidants; dyes and pigments; household cleaners and automotive degreasers; solvent and paints; lubricating oils and gasoline additives; adhesives; fiber and wood preservatives; UV- absorbers and photographic chemicals; ore flotation agents.
